What is Fat Freezing?

Fat Freezing is another term used to describe CoolSculpting however it may not necessarily be performed using the CoolSculpting methods or machines.

Other Fat Freezing treatments include; SculpSure®, UltraShape®, truSculpt® and Vanquish®. Some of these treatments work by freezing fat cells but others may instead employ heat through the use of ultrasound or radiofrequency energy.

At The Private Clinic, our fat freezing treatment is carried out with CoolSculpting which is FDA approved for reducing fat and 17 million treatment cycles have been performed worldwide.

What is coolsculpting fat removal and how does it work?

CoolSculpting, also known as Fat Freezing or Crylipolypolis treatment is a non-invasive fat removal or reduction treatment. It works to freeze areas of unwanted fat to help re-contour your body.

CoolSculpting works by freezing or crystallising the fat cells in the area being treated using cooling vacuums, surface plates or cups. The fat freezing technology selectively targets and destroys fat cells without damaging the surrounding tissue. Once the fat cells are treated, they are destroyed and removed as your body processes the fat and removes these dead cells through a natural inflammatory clearing process. The procedure involves no surgery, no needles and there is minimal downtime following treatment.

CoolSculpting originated many years ago when scientists at Harvard University observed that children who ate ice lollies developed dimples in their cheeks. Dieter Manstein, MD and R. Rox Anderson, MD began to realise that ice could selectively damage small pockets of fat cells and from that; the technique of fat freezing was developed. The idea that the cold could target fat cells without damaging the skin or surrounding tissue was the insight behind cryolipolysis, the science on which the CoolSculpting procedure is based on.

17 million CoolSculpting fat freeze treatment cycles have been performed worldwide.

How does fat freezing work?

At The Private Clinic, our fat freezing treatment is carried out with CoolSculpting which uses the cryolipolysis technique to freeze the fat.

CoolSculpting is suitable to be used on different areas of the body where stubborn fat can be found. Areas treated include the thighs, tummy, arms and under the chin.

The treatment involves placing an applicator on the skin of the area that is being treated.

The applicator applies freezing temperatures to the skin which freezes the fat cells beneath causing them to die however the surrounding skin and tissue is not affected.

The controlled cooling technology is able to precisely target fat cells to the exact point when they crystallise and die which is a process is called apoptosis.

Once the fat cells have died, they are processed naturally by the body via the lymphatic system and then exposed of naturally by the body as waste.

The fat cells that have been removed from the body do not grow back meaning patients can expect long lasting results providing they maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Treatment can take from as little as 35 minutes, and multiple machines can even be used to treat different areas at the same time.

Can CoolSculpting get rid of belly fat?

Is stomach fat removal possible with Coolsculpting?

CoolSculpting treatment can be really effective to reduce belly fat. The stomach or abdomen is a common area for both males and females to store fat. Fat around the belly can be tricky to remove with diet and exercise alone. It is often caused by high stress levels, hormonal imbalance, ageing and a poor diet high in alcohol, refined carbohydrates and saturated fats.

As we become older, hormone levels will change making it much harder to reduce excess weight from the stomach. Weight loss can’t be focused to one particular area so if you have noticed weight loss in other areas but no change to the stomach or very little change then Fat Freezing may be an ideal option without causing too much downtime.

To find out more about how CoolSculpting can treat belly fat, book a free consultation with one of our fat freezing experts.

Does CoolSculpting work on arms?

CoolSculpting can be a really effective treatment to target stubborn areas of fat on the arms.

Unwanted fat on the upper arms is often referred to as bingo wings and is very common. Upper arm fat is more of a problem with women as the fat deposits in this area are affected by hormonal changes and are often resistant to diet and exercise.

We have a rage of different sized applicators which allows us to treat excess fat on the arms in the most comfortable way.

To find out more about how CoolSculpting can treat arm fat, book a free consultation with one of our fat freezing experts.

Can you be too fat for CoolSculpting?

CoolSculpting treatment is not designed to be method for weight loss and it is not recommended for the treatment of obesity.

We recommend that patients are as close to their ideal weight as possible before starting treatment. CoolSculpting is designed to help small areas of stubborn fat cells that have been resistant to diet and exercise.

To find out if you are suitable for coolsculpting, book a free consultation to speak to a CoolSculpting medical expert.

Does CoolSculpting help with stretch marks?

CoolSculpting treatment is not designed to improve stretch marks.

Stretch marks are streaks, stripes or lines that develop on the skin on all areas of the body. They are a form of scarring that occurs when the skin is unable to return to its normal form following a period of intense stretch or pull on the area – often due to weight gain or pregnancy. Stretch marks can fade over time and do not cause any medical concern but they can cause people to feel self-conscious.

Unfortunately, CoolSculpting treatment is not for stretch marks as it is only designed to target fat beneath the surface of the skin.

At The Private Clinic, we do offer alternative treatments for stretch mark reduction such as dermaroller and mesotherapy.

To find out more book a consultation to speak with one of our skin experts.

How long does CoolSculpting take?

The amount of time required for CoolSculpting treatment will depend on the treated areas and the applicator being used.

Fat-freezing treatment times at The Private Clinic range from 35 – 75 minutes.

  • Cool Petite and Cool Advantage Applicators – 35 mins
  • Cool Mini and Cool Advantage Plus Applicators – 45 mins
  • Cool Smooth Applicator – 75 mins

At our clinics we offer Dualsculpting™; dual machines that perform two Coolsculpting treatments simultaneously.

Offering DualSculpting allows us to decrease the treatment time by half. Now, with the recent addition of the revolutionary CoolAdvantage™ applicator; it is possible to dual sculpt two areas in as little as 35 minutes.

DualSculpting offers patients reduced treatment time with increased patient comfort.

Unfortunately, we are unable to treat the chin area with DualSculpting or CoolAdvantage techniques.

Does CoolSculpting hurt?

CoolSculpting is not designed to be a painful treatment and at The Private Clinic it is our priority to ensure that patients are comfortable throughout the treatment process.

As the name suggests, Fat Freezing procedures do involve a freezing process which can be uncomfortable for some initially but the area will then gradually become numb meaning you are likely not to feel anything for the remainder of the treatment. When the applicator is applied to the area being treated it does use a vacuum to draw the fatty tissue in, this could cause a feeling of tugging, and pinching or pulling which again, may feel uncomfortable but this should subside once the area becomes numb.

What does CoolSculpting feel like?

CoolSculpting is not a painful treatment but patients may experience a pulling sensation when the applicator is applied followed by intense cold. The area treated will gradually become numb and you will not really feel anything for the remainder of the treatment.

Following CoolSculpting treatment some patients experience very mild discomfort in the area treated and we advise them to wear loose fitting clothing, avoid pressure on the area and use paracetamol to help manage discomfort if required.

Are CoolSculpting results permanent?

Is Cool Sculpting permanent?

Once the treated fat cells are crystallised (frozen) during the CoolSculpting procedure, they are then destroyed and are naturally processed and eliminated from the body.

CoolSculpting is a fat reduction procedure which means that once the treated fat cells are gone, they are gone for good and are unable to grow again or be replaced with fat cells.

However, CoolSculpting is not able to remove all the fat cells from one area therefore it is important that you maintain a healthy lifestyle to avoid excessive weight gain which may alter the results of treatment.

Book a free consultation to find out more about what to expect from Fat Freezing treatment.

Does CoolSculpting also tighten skin?

Does CoolSculpting tighten loose skin?

CoolSculpting treatment is only designed to target the fat that is underneath your skin. For patients who have good skin elasticity the skin will contract as the fat is diminished from the body. Some patients may have pre-existing skin looseness and unfortunately CoolSculpting is not going to be able to help reduce this.

If loose skin is more of a concern than unwanted fat then you may be recommended to consider a surgical procedure which is designed to remove areas of loose skin. Procedures like a tummy tuck or arm lift are popular alternatives to CoolSculpting.

To find out if you are suitable for CoolSculpting treatment and what results you can expect to achieve, book a free consultation with one of our experts.

How many CoolSculpting treatments do I need?

The number of CoolSculpting treatments that a patient may require will vary. At your consultation you will be assessed and provided with an individual treatment plan to help you achieve the best results.

Results from CoolSculpting are seen after 8-12 weeks and at this time the patient will be re-assessed to see if they require further treatment.

To find out more about CoolSculpting treatment, book a free consultation with one of our experts.

When will I see the results from CoolSculpting?

The results from CoolSculpting are not instant as it will take your body some time to naturally process the frozen fat cells and remove them from the body. Most patients see results between 2 and 6 months following treatment.

Many patients start to see results from 4-6 weeks after treatment and these results will continue to improve for up to 14-16 weeks. Your body will continue to eliminate fat cells from the body for 4-6 months following treatment.

Does CoolSculpting really work?

CoolSculpting has a high success rate and 17 million treatments have been performed worldwide.

It is an effective FDA-approved treatment for removing areas of fat from the body, and it has fewer side effects than other fat-reduction procedures, such as liposuction.

However, CoolSculpting is not a weight loss treatment and having realistic expectations from treatment is important. The treatment may not work the same for everyone and results may vary from patient to patient. The lifestyle that the patient leads following treatment will always impact results too.

We have a range of fat reduction treatments available across our clinics and recommend that you come in for a free consultation to speak to one of our experts who will be able to help you decide which treatment is going to be best for you.

How many inches can you lose with CoolSculpting?

The results from Coolsculpting will vary from patient to patient and it will also depend on the amount of fat in each area that was being treated.

CoolSculpting has shown fat layer reductions across multiple treatment areas of up to 27% at 6 months.

CoolSculpting fat loss is not measured by inches as this is not an accurate way of measuring subtle volume loss.

Results and benefits may vary from patient to patient taking into consideration factors such as age, lifestyle, exercise regime and medical history.

What is the downtime following CoolSculpting treatment?

There is no downtime following CoolSculpting treatment. You may experience some discomfort from the area treated for 24-48 hours but many patients are able to return to work and their everyday activities quickly after the procedure.

Some patients experience bruising post-procedure which can last up to 10 days and cause extended discomfort but this is easily managed and usually does not require any pain relief.

Is CoolSculpting safe and any side effects?

How safe is CoolSculpting and any side effects?

CoolSculpting treatment has a well-established safety and efficacy profile and is FDA-cleared for cryolipolysis fat reduction.

Our CoolSculpting machines are controlled cooling devices that have built-in safety measures such as sensors that are able to detect if the skin is becoming too cold in which case the system will automatically shut down.

With 17 million CoolSculpting treatment cycles performed worldwide, the treatment is proven to be safe and effective for non-surgical fat reduction.

All of our CoolSculpting practitioners are extremely knowledgeable and have been well-trained in the UK, so you can feel reassured that you are in the best hands.

Results and benefits may vary from patient to patient taking into consideration factors such as age, lifestyle, and medical history.

Is CoolSculpting FDA approved?

CoolSculpting has been FDA-cleared since 2010.

FDA stands for The Food and Drug Administration which is a government agency established in 1906. The FDA is responsible for regulating food and drugs as well as cosmetics, blood donations, veterinary products, tobacco, medical devices and treatments such as CoolSculpting.

CoolSculpting was originally FDA-approved in 2010 for reducing fat in the flanks/ love handle area. Since then, it’s gradually gained clearance for an additional 8 areas after getting overwhelmingly positive results in various clinical trials.

What are the side effects to CoolSclupting treatment?

What are the negative effects of CoolSculpting?

As with any medical procedure, there are side effects associated with CoolSculpting treatment.

Typical side effects to CoolSculpting includes redness, swelling, blanching, bruising, firmness, tingling, stinging, aching, tenderness, skin sensitivity, itching, cramping and numbness of the treatment site. The majority of these side effects should subside a few days following treatment. Numbness in the treated area can remain for several weeks.

Paradoxical adipose hyperplasia, late onset pain, freeze burn, vasovagal symptoms, subcutaneous induration, hyperpigmentation and hernias are all very rare side effects but your practitioners will discuss these with you ahead of treatment to enable you to feel well informed before deciding to go ahead with fat freezing treatment.

The CoolSculpting procedure is not for everyone. You should not have the CoolSculpting procedure if you suffer from cryoglobulinaemia, cold agglutinin disease or paroxysmal cold haemoglobinuria. The CoolSculpting procedure is not a treatment for obesity.

What happens to the frozen fat cells during CoolSculpting?

Once the fat cells have been targeted and frozen your body will gradually start to shed them. Over the course of 6 months these fat cells will become processed and will be naturally eliminated from the body. CoolSculpting is a permanent procedure meaning that once the fat cells have been removed, it is very unlikely that they will return.

How does the fat leave your body after CoolSculpting?

How does your body get rid of fat after coolsculpting?

During a CoolSculpting treatment, the fat cells in the treated area will become frozen and your body will start to shed them gradually over time.

The destroyed components of the cells are taken up and eliminated through the lymph system, processed through your liver and excreted as waste.

Once the fat cells have been permanently eliminated from the body they will not return.

This process can take 3-4 months to complete.

To find out more about how CoolSculpting works, book a free consultation to speak with one of our experts.

If I gain weight following CoolSculpting will the fat return?

Does fat come back after CoolSculpting?

We encourage patients to maintain a healthy lifestyle following CoolSculpting treatment. Once the fat cells from the treated area have gone, they should not return to the area treated.

However, if weight gain was to occur it would distribute more evenly throughout the body instead of just in the area treated. A healthy number of fat cells will still remain in the area treated so they are still able to enlarge although there won’t be as many cells there as there were previously.

CoolSculpting should not be seen as an alternative to exercise. In order to maintain your results you will need to continue a healthy lifestyle. Results may vary from patient to patient.

Does CoolSculpting permanently remove fat cells?

How long does CoolSculpting results last?

CoolSculpting treatment is designed to permanently destroy fat cells in the areas that have been treated. The fat cells during CoolSculpting are essentially removed from the body and once fat cells are removed they are not replaced with new fat cells.

CoolSculpting does not remove all of the fat cells from the treated area however so there is still a potential for the existing fat cells to expand should you gain weight following treatment but as long as you maintain a healthy lifestyle you should be able to have long-lasting results.

Results and benefits may vary from patient to patient taking into consideration factors such as age, lifestyle, and medical history.

Is CoolSculpting worth the money?

According to the cosmetic surgery healthcare marketplace RealSelf, 83% of people say that CoolSculpting is ‘worth it’.

CoolSculpting treatment is FDA approved for treating stubborn areas of body fat such as the abdomen, flanks, thighs, bra bulge, back fat, buttocks, chin, and upper arms without surgery.

RealSelf members who said CoolSculpting was ‘Worth It’ saw good results that lasted over time.

Results and experience may vary from patient to patient.

Which is better Kybella or CoolSculpting?

When it comes to reducing fat under the chin, CoolSculpting and Kybella often come up as popular non-surgical treatment options.

We recommend CoolSculpting as the best method for treating this area of fat.

Kybella involves a series of injections and often 4-6 treatments are required. Bruising and swelling can last for 2-4 weeks and can be very prominent for the first 2 weeks at least.

CoolSculpting treatment does not require any incisions or injections. The area may appear red initially after treatment but the risk of bruising and swelling is very low.

CoolSculpting is a much more comfortable procedure with minimal downtime allowing patients to return to their everyday activities immediately after treatment.

Can you freeze fat at home?

Do it yourself CoolSculpting?

We do not recommend attempting to freeze fat at home.

CoolSculpting is an FDA approved treatment for freezing fat and therefore has been proven to be a safe and reliable method of reducing fat using this method.

Carrying out fat freezing procedures at home is very unsafe and puts you at an increased risk of frostbite.

Our CoolSculpting practitioners are highly experienced in performing the CoolSculpting procedure and have undergone extensive training on knowledge of anatomy and expertise in the technique.  This ensures that our patients are in the safest of hands when having fat freezing treatment at any of our clinics.

Can ice packs reduce belly fat?

It is true that fat cells will ‘freeze’ and reduce when they are subjected to cold temperatures. This is known as crylipolysis and is the basis for of how CoolSculpting treatment works.

However, skin is not able to tolerate cold temperatures for very long without being damaged and ice packs placed directly on the skin can cause frostbite and using towels will just reduce the effects of the cooling process.

CoolSculpting treatment is FDA approved for reducing belly fat and uses controlled cooling to safely target fat cells without damaging the skin and surrounding tissues.

We do not condone the use of ice packs to reduce belly fat and would not recommend anyone to try this method.
