For many men, the thought of losing their hair can be a terrifying sign of aging and a blow to the ego.
Hair loss can have psychological effects including high levels of anxiety and depression, decreased confidence, and social withdrawal, and it affects about 53 per cent of men aged 40 to 49 and up to 90 per cent in their lifetime.
However experts have now revealed everything you need to know about the process – from why it happens to how to find treatment for it.
The Private Clinic told FEMAIL that losing hair is a ‘natural part of life’ – while explaining the different methods to cope with balding.
Why am I losing my hair?
Male pattern baldness starts when your hair begins to ebb at the temples, on the crown, or, at both points.
However hair loss is a natural part of life, according to experts.
The Private Clinic, told FEMAIL that humans ‘typically lose between 50-100 hairs a day.’
They explained that for men, when that figure starts to creep north of 100 strands, they may be at risk of going bald.
Their hair transplant surgeons say: ‘There are a number of factors that can cause hair loss’.
They pointed to ‘hormone changes, nutrition, stress, age and certain medical conditions and medications’ as among the reasons for the loss.
However, they explained the primary cause of hair loss is in a person’s genes.
And while many claim men should look at their mother’s father, in reality, hair loss can come from either side of your family.
What triggers the process is a hormone called dihydrotestosterone, otherwise known as DHT.
Men who are very receptive to DHT are more likely to lose their hair, with the hormone latching onto hair follicles and starving them of oxygen.
By cutting off the blood circulation at the top of your head, individual strands start to shrink, weaken and eventually fall out.
Every time your body tries to force through new hairs, they become fairer, finer and less visible.
