Mole, Cyst, Lipoma and Skin Tag Removal Near Me

Lumps and bumps on the skin are common occurrences and the majority of the time are not usually harmful, but for some, they can become bothersome and many wish to have them removed.

It can be difficult to tell lumps and bumps apart so we would recommend a consultation with a medical specialist to first diagnose the cause of the lump or bump before recommending a removal procedure. Our Consultant Plastic Surgeons and Dermatologists are happy to help.

Typical lumps and bumps that we can treat in-clinic include:

Cyst

cyst removal

Cysts are lumps beneath the skin that are usually filled with fluid, pus or keratin buildup.

They typically form when the normal process of shedding dead skin fails and the cells stay under the skin. The dead skin skills continue to release keratin which then forms a pus-filled lump.

There are different variations of cysts including sebaceous and epidermoid cysts.

Cysts are not painful unless pressed, a painful cyst may instead be a boil or abscess which is caused by an infection.

Treatment for a cyst will depend on the type of cyst you have, the size and location. In most cases, surgical excision of the cyst will be recommended.

Lipoma

lipoma removal

Lipoma is commonly misdiagnosed as a cyst. They appear as a lump on the body but are instead made up of a collection of fatty tissue. They are harmless but they can gradually grow larger over time which is why many patients wish to have them removed.

Mole

mole removal

Moles typically appear as round or oval-shaped brown spots or lumps on the skin. Whilst generally, they are harmless, they do carry a risk of developing melanoma. Any sudden changes to the appearance of a mole must be reported to your GP. Many seek mole removal for both cosmetic reasons but for medical reasons such as preventing them from becoming cancerous.

Skin Tag

skin tag removal

A skin tag is a small growth on the surface of the skin that is made up of excess skin. They can appear all over the body but are often found in areas of skin friction such as the neck, groin, and armpit. Skin tags are not a health concern, but they can be annoying as they often catch on clothing or jewellery.

Minor Surgery Removal

Cysts, Lipomas, Moles and Skin Tags all require a minor surgery procedure known as surgical excision to remove them. These are performed using local anaesthetic and either a scalpel, curettage, or cautery technique for removal.

  • Scalpel – A surgical scalpel is used to cut and excise a lesion. The wound is then sealed with internal and external surgical sutures or stitches.
  • Curettage – A looped or hooked instrument known as a curette is used for scooping, scraping, or excising a mole or cyst.
  • Cautery – The use of an electrical current and elevated heat through a small metal tip, to treat a targeted area of skin.

In some instances, non-surgical options such as cryotherapy, electrolysis and Hyfrecation could be used to treat small skin tags and moles.  Our skin experts will provide you with a variety of options.

Is Cyst, Lipoma, Moles and Skin Tag removal available on the NHS?

You will be referred to a dermatologist if your GP has any concerns regarding your cysts or moles. The dermatologist will determine whether removal is necessary; if so, the NHS may add you to their waiting list to perform the procedure.

The NHS will not remove a harmless mole or cyst, even if you feel that it is negatively affecting your appearance. This is because, rather than being a necessary medical surgery, it is considered a cosmetic or non-essential one. [1]

Lipomas are only removed on the NHS if they are growing or causing symptoms because of where they are located. [2]

If a mole, cyst, lipoma or skin tag bothers you in any way, you can choose to have it removed privately. Get in touch to find out more.

Minor Surgery Reviews

“For years I had a few moles that irritated me. My first call was to my GP who confirmed they were not malignant, but the NHS does not provide the service of removing them. I decided to go to The Private Clinic in Harley Street where I met Dr Mark Lloyd and his assistant Cat Digregorio, who explained the mole removal procedure to me as well as the cost. And the possibility to pay in stages if that would work better within my budget. The procedure was booked for a fortnight later, and the operation was done within half an hour. The staff at the clinic are so sweet and caring, and I was looked after by Elaine Meltzer. I highly recommend The Private Clinic.” – Monique, Mole Removal Patient

“I had a cyst removed on cheekbone, I’m happy with the results, I strongly recommend The Private Clinic, special thanks to Mr Mouzakis and his team that helped me and treated my problem!” – Vasilis, Cyst Removal Patient
