Treating Lipoedema with MicroLipo

GENERAL

You may not have heard of Lipoedema before and that is no surprise, since first being diagnosed to a patient in the 1940s it is still a relatively unknown and often misdiagnosed condition with reports of only 10% of medical professionals having any knowledge of it.
It can often be confused with Lymphoedema which although similar in symptoms there are a number of differences;

So what is Lipoedema?
Lipoedema is a chronic condition that involves a build-up of fat cells in the thighs, buttocks and legs. There have been rare cases where men have been diagnosed but it usually only occurs in women.
How do I know if I have it?
You may notice that your lower limbs are larger and not in proportion with the rest of your body. Despite weight loss efforts there will be no change in your lower body and you’ll find that if you do gain weight it will generally be in this area. diagram-lipoedema-the-private-clinic
Symptoms can include:
Large legs that are column like in appearance
Heaviness & discomfort
Upper body being smaller than lower body
Fat pads below the knee
Fat pads on the side of the thigh
Feet are unaffected
Random bruising
Skin may look pale and feel cold
Cellulite appearance
The Lipoedema UK Big Survey in 2014 discovered that 78% of Lipoedema sufferers questioned developed symptoms between the ages of 18-25 but only 7% received a diagnosis at that time.
It is believed that 11% of the female population may suffer from some degree of Lipoedema so if you do feel that any of the symptoms described are familiar then we highly recommend visiting your GP for a proper diagnosis.
What can The Private Clinic to do help?
We are proud to be one of very few clinics able to offer specialist treatment for female Lipoedema sufferers. MicroLipo is a form of minimally-invasive liposuction which can be used to help manage the condition and ease the strain on day-to-day activities.
MicroLipo has been recognised by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence as a way to reduce the symptoms of the condition and it has proven to be incredibly effective in many cases.
The treatment is carried out under a local anaesthetic so you will be awake during the procedure and there will be no need for an overnight stay. There will be no stitches used and a minimal risk of scarring as only very small incisions are made meaning the downtime and recovery is still apparent but reduced significantly compared to surgical liposuction.

Lymphoedema sufferer, Judith Broadbent has spent years struggling with the condition which left one of her legs twice the size as the other. She has since had the MicroLipo procedure to remove the excess fat in the legs.

Judith said: “To say the MicroLipo procedure has been life changing is an understatement. I had suffered for years with Lymphoedema and was at the end of my tether when I decided to go ahead with the procedure. I had tried everything else on offer to me, and was ready to try anything.   I can honestly say that it was the best thing I have ever done. The treatment was straightforward – it was carried out under local anaesthetic and I was in and out the same day – and my leg more than halved in size following the procedure. My doctor, Dr Gupta, made it clear to me that this was not a cure; however, there is no sign of my leg returning to the size it was pre-treatment. I know I will be on a lifelong management programme, but I can happily deal with that! I am just so happy that I can wear and buy trousers and that I don’t feel disfigured anymore.” *
