1 – Choose a safe medical provider

You may be surprised to know that dermal filler can be brought and injected by anybody whether they have any medical qualifications or not. Dermal filler is currently unregulated on the UK market, unlike botox which can only be prescribed by a qualified doctor or prescribing nurse – although it can still legally be injected by people with no medical training whatsoever.

We recommend that dermal filler (and botox) is only injected by a medical professional which includes doctors and nurses. You can check a practitioner’s qualification by looking them up on the website of their relevant governing body. For example the General Medical Council (GMC) or the Royal College of Nursing (RCN).

Not only should you be choosing a medical professional, but more importantly you should be choosing a medical professional who has had sufficient additional cosmetic training in dermal filler treatment. With proper training, they should have been mentored by an expert and completed 50 – 100 procedures. You can check for professional body membership such as the British College of Aesthetic Medicine (BCAM) or the British Association of Cosmetic Nurses (BACN).

2 – Have a consultation

3 – Do you research

When you find a clinic or professional that you are considering visiting. Check to see if they have a website, social media page or ask friends/family for recommendations. You should be able to see before and after photos and patient reviews from the clinic or provider which will give you an idea of what to expect from the treatment.

4 – Book a follow up

Once you have treatment, we recommend booking a follow up for at least 2 weeks post treatment. This allows you to return to the clinic free of charge to make sure that everything is okay. Any dissatisfaction you may have with the filler treatment can be discussed and any additional treatment can be performed to rectify this. If it comes close to the time of your check-up appointment and you are satisfied with the results of your treatment then many patients choose to cancel this and get back in touch when they want the treatment again. If you do choose to cancel be sure to give plenty of notice however as your time slot could be given to someone else.

5 – Keep it clinical

Dermal filler treatment should be carried out in a safe and hygienic establishment that is well equipped with suitable standards. We would advise patients to be cautious of providers offering dermal filler treatment at home and at parties which are not suitable places to have treatment.
