Breasts after weight loss
Loosing weight can be a great achievement for many and it often takes a lot of determination and healthy efforts to achieve this which is why to then notice changes in your breast shape or size can cause a pause on your celebrations.
Weight loss will affect every woman’s breasts differently as our breast shape and size will vary. Breasts are made up of fatty tissue and weight loss is a decrease in fatty tissue so this can cause breast volume loss too – even if you didn’t intend it too.
When the fatty tissue in the breast shrinks and decreases, the underlying supportive ligaments often do not contract which is when breast sagging occurs.
How to treat breasts after weight loss?
We often see patients come to see us who are unhappy with the shape of their boobs after weight loss with many experiencing volume loss and sagging. The best procedure available will depend on what your goals are from surgery.
Breast Augmentation
If you are unhappy with volume loss and wish to increase the size of your breasts, then a breast augmentation procedure with implants is going to give you the best result.
Breast Uplift Surgery
If you are unhappy with breast sagging and wish to have breasts that are more uplifted and firmer then a breast uplift procedure is most likely to be the recommended option for the best results.
Breast Uplift with Implants
If you are unhappy with your breasts because of sagging and volume loss, then a combined procedure approach may be the best option. This may involve having two separate procedures, the first to uplift the breast and the second to increase the size or you may be suitable to have one single procedure where both are performed at the same time.
We recommend visiting an experienced plastic surgeon who specialises in breast procedures who will be able to assess you and listen to your concerns and goals to be able to recommend the best option for you.
When deciding if to go ahead with breast surgery after weight loss it is worth considering your future goals. If you plan to lose more weight or go through pregnancy, then it may be worth waiting as both of these instances can cause further changes in breast shape and size which may alter your results from surgery.
Non-surgical treatments for breasts after weight loss
If you feel surgery is not right for you, then there are some non-surgical options that may help to improve the appearance of your breasts.
The first is to work on building up your upper body strength and muscle volume in the chest. Doing this will help to fill loose sagging skin and tighten skin tissue. Great exercises for this include push ups and dumbbell presses but we recommend speaking to a fitness specialist to help you get the best out of your workouts.
Eating a healthy diet will always help to improve skin quality, coloured fruits and vegetables are high in antioxidants and selenium which help to prevent skin damage and loss of firmness. We recommend taking a look at your diet and ensuring you are eating a well-balanced proportion of these types of foods each day.
Drinking water throughout the day has loads of health benefits and one of them is improving skin condition. Skin that is dehydrated will appear loose compared to hydrated skin which is likely to look a lot firmer and plumper.
Ensuring that your breasts are well supported is really important when it comes to exercising especially. Make sure you are wearing a supportive sports bra when performing all types of exercise will help to lessen the pressure and strain on your breasts and avoid stretching the connective tissues within the breasts.
