Bunion Removal minimally invasive treatment in Bournemouth
Bunions can be a nuisance for many who suffer with them, from aching feet to struggling to find comfortable shoes it can be a daily struggle. Seeking advice from a podiatrist can often help to provide solutions for managing bunions and alleviating discomfort but, surgery is the only method to treat bunions.
Surgical treatment for bunion typically comes with lengthy downtime and pain which causes many to live with bunion discomfort. The Private Clinic exclusively offer a minimally invasive keyhole bunion procedure with no scar, no metal fixtures and minimal downtime.
What are bunions?
A bunion, sometimes called a Hallux Valgus in medical terminology, is a foot malformation that typically affects the big toe. When your big toe pushes against your next toe, it causes the big toe joint to swell and protrude out the side of your foot. Typically this is how bunions are first identified – a bony lump on the outside border of the big toe.
Sometimes bunions can occur on the side of the little toe, these are known as tailor’s bunions.
Bunions that form on the top of the foot are more commonly referred to as a hammer toe.
What causes Bunions?
The exact cause of a bunion is unknown as it is either a congenital bunion or an acquired bunion.
A congenital bunion may result from inherited foot types, birth defects, or genetics.
An acquired bunions are said to be frequently brought on prior injury to the foot or by wearing uncomfortable or ill-fitting shoes. This is because excessive pressure is put onto the foot forcing the first and fifth toes towards the centre which compresses the other toes. Rigid shoes can also restrict the natural movement of the toes which weakens the foot muscles.
How do I treat my bunion?
Many treatments are offered for bunions, but they are unlikely to be effective unless they involve surgery.
One of the most popular bunion treatment options is to use bunion pads and splints, which are available at most pharmacies, health stores, and even supermarkets. These are fantastic products that can be really effective in reducing the pain and discomfort associated with bunions, but it is unlikely that they will have much of an effect on the bunion’s size.
Although bunion surgery is the most effective way to cure bunions, many patients reserve it for last because of the procedure’s reputation for long waiting lists, significant downtime, and difficult recovery.
The Private Clinic can offer patients a minimally invasive bunion procedure with no extensive scaring, no metal fixtures an minimal downtime with patients being able to walk out of the hospital after surgery without the need for crutches.
Our unique keyhole technique for bunion removal surgery eliminates the need for immobilisation or rest for the healing of foot fractures. The surgeon will use surgical dental burrs to remodel the foot’s bones and rectify the deformity through tiny, nearly scarless incisions of two to three millimetres.
Geometric fractures are tiny, precisely spaced fractures that occur in the foot. Fixative devices like screws or pins that press the fractured bone into place are not necessary. Instead of being held to a predetermined norm that may not be appropriate for the patient and may raise the risk of infection after surgery, they are allowed to heal naturally in accordance with the patient’s load-bearing needs.
