Can I get a mole or cyst removed on the NHS?
Many people who are looking to have a mole or cyst removed on the NHS are facing huge waiting lists and often are not even getting to that stage after being told that they are unsuitable for treatment.
You can get a mole or cyst removed on the NHS, but it is unlikely that you would be deemed suitable for NHS removal treatment.
The NHS is no longer delivering any non-essential mole or cyst removal treatments. This means that the majority of mole removal or removal of skin lumps and bumps (e.g. warts, verrucae, and skin tags) are no longer administered for free on the NHS unless it is believed to be life-threatening or cancerous.
How do you get a mole or cyst removed on the NHS?
If you are concerned about the appearance of a mole or cyst then it is best to start with a doctors appointment at your local GP surgery. They will be able to examine and analyse the mole or cyst and diagnose it. You may be referred to a dermatologist for a further examination and if they feel you are at risk then you will be able to undergo treatment on the NHS.
If the mole or cyst is determined to be harmless or benign then you can either live with it or choose to have it privately removed.

How are moles or cysts removed?
There are a few different methods in which your mole, cyst or lesion can be removed. These include:
Surgical Excision
The most common method of removing moles, cysts, or lesions from the body is surgical excision which is a minor surgical procedure performed under local anaesthetic. A scalpel is used to remove the moles, lesion or cyst from the skin and stitches are used to close the incision.
Cutterage and Cautery
Curettage and cautery is a traditional form of skin lesion removal but is still highly effective. It is performed under local anaesthetic and scooped instrument called a curette is used to scrape the mole or lesion from the surface of the skin. Heat is then applied to the area to seal the area and stop bleeding (cauterisation).
Cryotherapy
Cryotherapy is likely to be unsuitable for cyst removal but could be used for small mole or lesion removals. The treatment uses liquid nitrogen which is applied to the area being treated to freeze it. Additional cryotherapy treatments may be required for full removal but this will be reviewed after 6 weeks.

Patient Reviews
“For years I had a few moles that irritated me. My first call was to my GP who confirmed they were not malignant, but the NHS does not provide the service of removing them. I decided to go to The Private Clinic in Harley Street where I met Dr Mark Lloyd and his assistant Cat Digregorio, who explained the mole removal procedure to me as well as the cost. And the possibility to pay in stages if that would work better within my budget. The procedure was booked for a fortnight later, and the operation was done within half an hour. The staff at the clinic are so sweet and caring, and I was looked after by Elaine Meltzer. I highly recommend The Private Clinic.” – Monique, Mole Removal Patient
“I had a cyst removed on cheekbone, I’m happy with the results, I strongly recommend The Private Clinic, special thanks to Mr Mouzakis and his team that helped me and treated my problem!” – Vasilis, Cyst Removal Patient
“I approached The Private Clinic for a mole removal and I’m really happy with the result. From the first consultation to the post operation check ups I was met by the friendly staff and the entire journey just went smoothly. I highly recommend The Private Clinic. Also a special thanks to Dr. Mark Lloyd, Cat, and the team for making the process comfortable.” – Sarah, Mole Removal Patient
“I would highly recommend Dr Mouzakis if you are thinking of having surgery for cosmetic reasons. I am really happy with the results of the removal of my xanthelasma. He is really professional knows what he is doing and very kind friendly and patient doctor.” – Bulutoglu, Lesion Removal Patient
“A few months ago I had a skin lesion removed from my left chin. I was treated respectfully throughout the whole consultation and treatment process. At all times I was kept fully informed what was happening and I received good advice. I have waited for a few months to write a review so that I could properly judge the result of the surgery. It has all gone well and I am delighted with the result. The lesion has gone and the site of the incision is almost invisible now. I would recommend Mr Mark Lloyd, Plastic & Ear Reconstruction Surgeon and I am grateful for the support of chaperone, Miss Sahera Begum. Both provided a high standard of care and I am grateful for their friendly and professional work.” – Adrian, Lesion Removal Patient
“I had 2 large moles removed from my face which I was very nervous about. They all were so kind and professional throughout and helped with all the details so I fully understood all the aftercare and procedure. I’m so pleased with the results and can’t believe how simple and swift everything seemed to Mr Michael Mouzakis. I can’t remember the nurse’s name but she was an absolute star too! Thank you” – Michelle, Mole Removal Patient
