Do I have tuberous breasts?
A lot of people don’t know much about tuberous breast deformity. If you feel you may have tuberous breasts, seeking a surgeon who has experience in treating patients with this condition is important to ensure that you will be getting the best advice and treatment recommendations.
What are tuberous breasts?
Tuberous or Tubular breasts are breasts that take on a more elongated and cone like appearance. They may have larger puffy areolas and not much upper breast volume. They are may also be referred to as a ‘snoopy breast deformity’.
What causes tuberous breasts?
Tuberous breasts occur when your breast tissue doesn’t grow as expected during puberty. There is often insufficient breast tissue and constricted fibrous bands within the breast tissue that causes a deformity to the shape of the breast.
How do I know if I have tuberous breasts?
Most individuals with tuberous breasts self-diagnose by comparing themselves against the common symptoms of tuberous breasts which includes:
- Downward pointing areolas
- Enlarged areolas
- Puffy Nipples
- Narrow breast base
- Lack of fullness in the base of the breast
- Larger than average gap between breasts
- High inframammary fold (where the base of the breast meets the ribs)
- Short distance from the areola to the inframammary fold
- Asymmetric breasts
Options for Improving the Shape of Tuberous Breasts
Tuberous breasts are harmless, and many can safely choose not to do anything about them. However, for many who feel like they would like to improve on their shape – there are options available and tuberous breast deformity can be corrected easily with surgery.
Each tuberous breast correction procedure will be different, and no two cases are going to be the same. Your first step is a consultation with a consultant plastic surgeon and breast surgery specialist. They will advise you based on the specifics of your own breasts. This will include your tuberous breast severity, any degree of breast asymmetry, the amount of existing breast tissue, nipple size, breast fold location, and much more.
Often a combination of breast surgery procedures and techniques are required to achieve the best results. This typically involves a breast uplift and breast enlargement procedure based on what the patient wishes to achieve.
Breast Enlargement
A breast enlargement with implants procedure is often involved to increase the size of the breasts as tuberous breasts are often limited in breast tissue.
Breast Uplift
A breast uplift is also most likely to be recommended as this will help to reshape the position and shape of the breast for a more aesthetically pleasing result. In most cases, patients with tuberous breasts do not have enough existing breast tissue to have a satisfactory result from a breast lift alone. In these instances, small breast implants are used to help give more shape to the breast without it being a significant increase in size.
Breast Constriction Release
A breast lift alone is often not sufficient as the downward tilt of the tuberous breast is caused by tissue constriction at the base of the breast. Surgery is required to release this tissue which helps to expand the lower portion of the breast. This lowers the inframammary fold and gives a much rounder shape to the breast.
2 Stage Procedure
It is common for many patients to have their tuberous breast correction performed as two separate procedures. Usually, a breast lift is performed first, and once healed a breast enlargement procedure is then carried out.
A two-stage procedure is most common in patients who have a more severe case of tuberous breasts or are looking to significantly increase their breast size.
