Many patients considering hair loss have previously researched if Hair Transplants are available on the NHS.

Hair transplants have become increasingly popular amongst both men and women who are experiencing hair loss. The technology involved in hair transplant procedures is now very advanced making it a much less invasive procedure that is more accessible to the general public.

Experiencing hair loss can be a traumatic experience and the expectation and increased pressures to look good and conceal imperfections can put a significant toll on anyone’s mental health.

This is why many look to the NHS for help in managing and restoring hair loss.

Can you get a hair transplant on the NHS?

Hair transplant procedures are not available on the NHS.

Whilst hair loss can be a medical problem and can impact mental health. It is very unlikely to be funded by the NHS as the treatment is considered to be cosmetic surgery.

The demand for NHS services is under extreme limits which means that the resources and funding need to be prioritised and delegated to where they are required the most – life-saving treatments.

Whilst cosmetic surgery can be funded on the NHS, this is usually down to exceptional circumstances that would need to go through a specialised funding application. These types of applications can take a considerable amount of time to process and unfortunately, the majority of these applications are rejected.

Mental Health and Hair Loss

The stigma associated with hair loss can have an effect on mental health. Conditions such as depression, anxiety, body dysmorphia and social phobias affect many people with hair loss.

In some cases, mental health conditions such as stress disorders can be the cause of hair loss, and tackling these will often result in a reduction in hair loss problems.

Hair transplants and hair loss treatments are a great way to restore areas of hair loss and hair transplant surgeons work carefully with patients to first establish the true cause of hair loss before suggesting a treatment plan.

Transgender Hair Transplants

Transgender hair transplants are not available through the NHS. This is a procedure that we can offer at our London Harley Street clinic.
