Can you get hernia repair on the NHS?

If you develop a hernia, you are most likely to seek guidance from your GP. Many are surprised to find out that they may not be suitable for hernia repair surgery on the NHS.

What are hernias?

Hernias occur most commonly in the groin or abdomen. They happen when there is a weakness in the tissue wall and or muscle. This weakness results in an internal part of the body pushing through. There are different types of hernia which all have different symptoms and affect each area of the body.

Can I get hernia repair on the NHS?

The criteria to be approved for Hernia repair surgery on the NHS is strict.

Patients are often required to go through a watchful waiting process until they develop pain that causes significant functional impairment. [1]

In a study of 700 patients with inguinal hernias in particular, the likelihood of increased pain with time was found to be 90% within 10 years. When they looked at watchful waiting vs surgery they found that whilst the risk of strangulation or obstruction was low, all patients required surgery after 7.5 years. [2]

Hernia Surgery Waiting List

Patients who have been approved for surgery on the NHS are likely to face increased wait times. Whilst the NHS states that patients have the right to start treatment within 18 weeks, this often isn’t the case with many people waiting weeks or even years for a surgical date.

Do I need to get my hernia treated?

Many hernias are asymptomatic. This means that you have no symptoms. In these instances, hernia surgery on the NHS will not be approved and instead, you will be told to wait until symptoms worsen before seeking further treatment.

Overall, the only cure for a hernia is surgery, so it is likely that you will need to get it treated. Ideally, we believe it is better to have it removed while your symptoms are minor otherwise more unnecessary complications could occur.

The biggest risk of an untreated hernia is that it can become strangulated. Whilst this is rare, it is very serious and requires urgent surgery.

What are the benefits of private hernia surgery?

Hernia’s will not get better on their own. They may remain un-bothersome for many months, even years but eventually they will start to impact everyday life and limit certain activities.

Surgery, known as Hernia Repair Surgery, is the only way to correct a hernia.
