How can I avoid hair loss?

HAIR LOSS

Many males accept hair loss as just a sign of ageing and that there is nothing they can do to stop it. But what if we were to tell you there are treatments that can help to slow that receding hair line down.
Many hair loss cases are caused by genetics and unfortunately there is not a lot you can do to avoid this. There are also preventable causes of hair loss which includes illness, nutritional deficiency, certain prescription drugs, emotional stress and hair products. Taking the time to take care of these will be beneficial alongside following our top tips to stop hair loss.
Iron Levels
Iron deficiency is a well-known cause of unexpected hair loss. Although it is more common in female patients, it is still worth noting for our male patients to add some iron-rich foods to your diet such as quinoa, dried fruit and dark leafy vegetables such as spinach. If you are eating a vegetarian or vegan diet this is especially important as red meats and eggs are high in iron but are avoided in this diet.
Keep calmHair-loss-blog-stress-the-private-clinic
Certain stressful events actually cause a shock to the system which alters the natural cycle of the hair growing phase which can result in as much as 40% of your hair dying.  It is common that you don’t actually realise this effect until round 3 months later when you notice an increase in the amount of hair you are shedding during brushing or showering. Usually it is a major life stress that will cause this, like an illness, not a stressful day in the office but if you are concerned about hair loss then it should still be a top priority.
Enjoy some seafoodHair-loss-blog-iron-the-private-clinic
Fish is a great source of omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin D which are linked to preventing hair loss especially in chemotherapy patients. Although it hasn’t been proven to work in the same way for otherwise healthy men it shouldn’t stop you from including more fish in your diet as precaution.
Remember to shampoo…Hair-loss-blog-shampoo-the-private-clinic
Personal hygiene is not a direct cause of hair loss but not keeping your scalp and hair clean through regular shampooing can lead to fungal scalp infection such as tinea capitis which actually results in patchy hair loss.
…But not too much
At the same time, don’t overdo it with the shampooing as too much shampoo can cause damage to the sebaceous glands that make sebum which naturally moisturises your hair and skin.
Vitamin BHair-loss-blog-nuts-the-private-clinic
As you can probably tell from reading this, a lot of the causes of hair loss revolve around diet. Another key item to include in your diet is the B vitamins, biotin, folate, B2 and B12. You may have heard of biotin as this is in a lot of medical hair loss treatments. Foods to consider may include; eggs, nuts, whole grains and low fat dairy products. If you are a vegan or vegetarian then look at including more fortified soy products such as soy milk and tofu into your diet and even Marmite!
Clear out your medicine cabinetHair-loss-blog-medication-the-private-clinic
Chemotherapy is well known for inducing hair loss but there are also plenty of prescription drugs that work in the same way. Blood thinners, gout medication, beta blockers, antidepressants, hormone pills and anti-seizure medications all have hair loss as a side effect. If you are worried about any of these then we thoroughly recommend talking to a doctor before you decide to stop taking them.
Get sweaty!Hair-loss-blog-exercise-the-private-clinic
Out of all the tips we have covered today – this is probably one of the most important. Not only is it good for your health in general but exercise can relive stress and improve circulation to the skin. Sweating during a workout helps your skin by flushing out impurities and although there is no firm evidence that someone who regularly exercises will never go bald – it is not going to hurt trying!
Find out what is causing hair loss
We offer a specialised hair loss DNA test called the Fagron TrichoTest™ . The tricho test is a genetic test that through a swab of the mouth and filled out questionnaire can help you to determine the cause of hair loss. The test combines the analysis of genetic variations and lifestyle factors which our experts in hair loss can use to personalise your treatment plan of topical, oral and/or surgical solutions to help with hair loss.
If you are concerned about hair loss then come and speak to our team of specialist trichologists who are experts in all things hair and scalp, and their aim is to reach an understanding of all the different factors that can affect the health of your hair and scalp to be able to diagnose and treat your hair related issues.
