Is it better to get a hair transplant in summer or winter?
Choosing the right time to have a hair transplant procedure can feel complicated depending on your circumstances. Many need to consider work and their appearance following a hair transplant procedure, especially if they are choosing not to tell others about it. You will also need to make note of any special occasions or travel plans to ensure that you are looking and feeling your best.
There is no official ideal time to get a hair transplant and we perform countless procedures throughout the year. There are some benefits and drawbacks to having a hair transplant in winter or summer which we will discuss below:
Benefits of a winter hair transplant
- Results will often start to be visible in the summer.
- Decreased risk of sweating which can impact newly transplanted follicles.
- Low risk of sunburn and excessive sun exposure.
Benefits of a summer hair transplant
- Patients often have more availability in the summer, winter can become busy with festive commitments from work, family, and friends.
- The warmer climate of summer allows more comfort for shorter haircuts that are often required pre and immediately post-hair transplant procedure.
- Your skin and hair is often deemed to be healthier in the summer due to exposure to more sunlight and vitamin D. Whilst caution must be taken, gentle exposure can help to increase hair growth as skin cells will regenerate at a faster rate.
Patient Case Study
This patient has his Hair Transplant procedure in December. By July he was already seeing great results and was enjoying the summer not having to worry about concealing his hair loss. After photos were taken 11 months after.
Is cold weather good for hair transplant?
Cold weather will not benefit or negatively impact the healing process after a hair transplant. As long as you take the right measures to protect your newly transplanted follicles then cold weather should not impact your hair transplant.
We advise patients to take care in bad weather such as strong winds and rain and to be cautious about wearing winter hats that may rub against the scalp. Wearing a coat with a loose-fitting hood may be more advantageous.
Does temperature affect hair transplant?
The ideal temperature for a hair transplant would be a comfortable mix between hot and cold. Whilst temperature directly may not play a huge part in your hair transplant recovery, the environmental factors surrounding hot or cold temperatures can cause issues.
High temperatures often result in sweating even if you are not being particularly active. Sweating is best to be avoided where possible post-hair transplant procedure due to the risk of infection.
Cold temperatures are not likely to impact healing, but if the patient tries to cover the area whilst trying to stay warm, then tight-fitting hats can rub against or apply pressure to the scalp and are best avoided in the early days post hair transplant surgery to aid better recovery and minimise risk of graft damage and irritation.
What is the best weather for hair transplant?
To summarise, there is no best time, season, weather, or temperature to get a hair transplant. As long as you undertake proper aftercare, you can achieve the best results, no matter which time of year you decide to have your procedure.
Our expert surgeons offer all hair transplant patients a comprehensive aftercare guide following their hair transplant procedure. This guide gives patients a day-by-day breakdown of what to expect and how to look after their new grafts. Our clinic teams are also always happy to answer any queries you might have after your surgery and can be easily contacted by phone or email.

Why choose The Private Clinic for FUE Hair Transplant Surgery?
- Highly experienced Hair Transplant Surgeons who have decades of experience and who have carried out thousands of hair transplants.
- The Private Clinic prides itself on ensuring you have the best quality and most comprehensive care.
- FUE is a minimally invasive treatment (meaning there is no cutting of a strip) and carried out under local anaesthetic – many patients either watch TV, or even fall asleep during the procedure.
- You won’t require any stitches after your treatment. This means that the recovery time is also reduced when compared to the Strip surgery (FUT). Find out more about hair transplant recovery here.
- We use the finest instruments, resulting in as minimal trauma to your scalp as possible.
- Following treatment, there will be no linear scarring across the back of your head as seen with the strip method (FUT) – you’ll be free to wear your hair long or short.
- We choose the best follicular unit (a group of hairs); this ensures that only the strongest, healthiest grafts are used for your hair transplant procedure.
- Your results will look natural, with denser packing – the hair is implanted in the direction that matches your hair growth, and because we select healthy follicular units, the treated area will look densely filled.
- Our surgeons are the only surgeons in the UK offering the Unshaven Hair Transplant (U-FUE) (the long-hair hair transplant), to those who prefer not to shave beforehand. At your consultation, we will be able to advise you on whether an unshaven procedure is suitable for you.
- Scars resulting from injuries or previous surgeries can also be corrected. This could be a previous bad hair transplant, or we can cover linear scars caused by FUT hair transplants.
- 24-hour patient helpline to ensure you are always in the best of hands.
- As many post-operative care and appointments with your Hair Transplant surgeon and nursing team as required.
- Comprehensive patient information, every step of the way.
- Outstanding clinic facilities.
- Our excellent reputation for patient safety and satisfaction, honest advice, and outstanding care means your journey with The Private Clinic will be an exciting experience for a new hairline.
