NHS cracks down on funded surgical treatments
It has been reported that the NHS is going to stop offering procedures such as tummy tucks and liposuction as part of a crackdown on spending in a bid to save £2bn a year.
If you have tried to have a procedure like liposuction on the NHS previously then you may have been faced with long wait times and endless criteria matching as there were already plans in place to reduce the number of procedures like liposuction that were offered to patients.
In 2018 they made plans to stop funding breast reductions and varicose vein surgery to try and save £439 million a year, but it was then reported in 2019 that the spending had only dropped by 3% in these areas.
A new list has now been produced, which includes corrective operations for congenital breast asymmetry and enlarged breast tissue in men. This is the third list that the NHS has made in a bid to reduce costs.
So for anyone who is pursuing these kinds of surgical treatments, you are most likely going to need to go private and self-fund the procedure.
How to find a private surgical provider?
When going private, there are a large number of options, but it is important to do your research and ensure that you are going to someone who is trained and experienced in the procedure you are after. Here are some top tips for finding a good private surgical provider or surgeon.
- Make sure you check out surgeon reviews and ratings on the clinic’s website, Trustpilot or Google Reviews. A good surgeon will be positively reviewed by their patients with exceptional ratings.
- Ensure to look at the surgeon’s before and after photos, to see if you are satisfied with the kind of results the surgeon is able to achieve.
- Find out the surgeon’s training and look for board certification in relevant fields.
- Check out the surgeon’s experience, e.g. the number of years they have been performing cosmetic surgery and also if they specialise in the procedure that you are interested in.
- Verify that the clinic the surgeon belongs to is CQC Certified.
- Is care and aftercare provided, be sure to ask what happens after your procedure as it is important that you find a surgeon and clinic that is there to support you throughout your surgical journey and beyond.
