Open Hernia Repair vs Laparoscopic Keyhole Hernia Surgery
When you start your hernia treatment journey, you will need to decide between traditional open hernia repair surgery or laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery. Both methods have benefits and considerations to assess. In this blog, we will be looking at both treatments to help you make an informed decision.
Open Hernia Surgery
Open hernia repair is where the surgeon makes an incision over the site of the hernia. This type of procedure is known as traditional hernia surgery as it is a time-tested surgical technique that has been performed for decades.
How is Open Hernia Repair performed?
Open hernia repair can be performed under local anaesthetic. The surgeon makes an incision over the area of the hernia to locate the hernia sac and push it back into place. At The Private Clinic, our surgeons then use a synthetic mesh to place over the defect which helps to reinforce the area and prevent recurrence.
What is the recovery like after Open Hernia Repair?
Open hernia repair is a more invasive procedure, and so patients often require 1-2 weeks for recovery before returning to work and other activities.
What are the advantages of Open Hernia Repair?
Open surgery for hernia repair is the NICE recommended treatment for hernia. It is also recommended by The British Hernia Society as the preferred treatment for single sided hernias.
Our surgeons believe that Open Hernia Repair with mesh offers reliable repair with a high success rate. It is suitable for the majority of patients, including older patients as it is performed under local anaesthetic and as a short-day case procedure.
What are the cons of Open Hernia Surgery?
In comparison to laparoscopic keyhole hernia repair, open hernia surgery does involve a larger scar and more downtime.
Laparoscopic Hernia Surgery
Laparoscopic hernia surgery, also referred to as keyhole hernia surgery, is a minimally invasive procedure that only requires small incisions to repair the hernia.
How is Laparoscopic Hernia Repair performed?
Laparoscopic hernia surgery is performed under general anaesthetic. The surgeon inserts a tiny camera (laparoscope) via small incisions made in the area of the hernia. This enables them to view the hernia inside the body. Carbon dioxide gas is then sometimes used to create more space to work. The hernia is then repaired from the inside of the body using specialised instruments. The defect is usually covered with mesh to reduce the chance of recurrence.
What are the advantages of Laparoscopic Repair?
- Smaller incisions and less scarring.
- Quicker recovery time and less post-operative pain.
- Ideal for bilateral or recurrent hernias.
What are the cons of Laparoscopic Repair?
Laparoscopic keyhole hernia repair is a very specialised technique and if performed by a surgeon who is not experienced, the consequences could be very serious.
Keyhole hernia repairs have to be carried out under general anaesthetic which carries its own set of risks. Older patients and those with other medical conditions may not be suitable for this treatment.
Which hernia procedure is best?
Both open hernia repair and laparoscopic keyhole hernia repair are effective procedures for treating hernias. At The Private Clinic, we prioritise Open Mesh Repair for our patients. This is where a surgical mesh is used but it is not stitched into place. This allows for the body to heal naturally around it which prevents recurrence.
A consultation with our qualified hernia repair surgeon will help to guide you towards the most suitable treatment plan for your specific case. Your treatment requirements will depend on various factors including the size and location of the hernia, your overall health, and the expertise of your surgeon.
