Results of The Latest 2022 Global Survey from ISAPS
The International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery has released the results of their 2022 Global Survey on Aesthetic/Cosmetic Procedures performed in 2021.
There was a notable 19.3% increase in procedures performed by plastic surgeons in 2021 with over 12.8 million surgical procedures and 17.5 million non-surgical treatments performed worldwide.
This increase shows the recovery from 2020 which saw a drop of -1.8% in all procedures performed most likely due to COVID-19.
Looking back across the past four years, there has been a 33.3% increase in Aesthetic surgical procedures and a significant increase of 54.4% in non-surgical procedures.
What was the most commonly performed procedure?
Previously, Breast Augmentation has always topped the list, but in 2021, Liposuction was the most common cosmetic surgical procedure with more than 1.9 million procedures performed.
2021 Top 5 Surgical Procedures
- Liposuction
- Breast Augmentation
- Eyelid Surgery
- Rhinoplasty
- Abdominoplasty
2021 Top 5 Non-Surgical Procedures
- Botulinum Toxin
- Hyaluronic Acid (Dermal Fillers)
- Hair Removal
- Non-Surgical Skin Tightening
- Non-Surgical Fat Reduction
Despite its drop to the second most performed procedure, Breast Augmentation still remained the most commonly performed surgical procedure for women followed by Liposuction, eyelid surgery, abdominoplasty and breast lifts.
Eyelid surgery was the most commonly performed procedure for men and there was a noticeable increase in gynecomastia surgery which was second placed before liposuction, rhinoplasty, and fat transfer to the face.
“These data clearly reflect the experience of recovery from the previous year’s negative impact of COVID-19 on aesthetic procedures and numbers now exceed the pre-pandemic ones. We noticed an interesting increase in surgical procedures related to so-called “body contouring”, such as liposuction, which is now ranked as the most common procedure, ahead of breast augmentation for the first time in many years, and also a similar emerging trend for abdominoplasty, thigh lift, and buttock augmentation. The lower increase in breast augmentation, and related increase in implant removals, also reflects our experience following the publication of reports on BIA-ALCL in the preceding year.”

How is the survey performed?
ISAP requested that participants completed a questionnaire that requested data on the number of specific surgical and non-surgical procedures that were carried out in 2021. Data from 1,003 plastic surgeons worldwide were collected. The results of the surveys were then compiled, tabulated, and analysed by an independent research firm on behalf of ISAP. A report with the results from the previous year is published at the end of the year.
