Scalp micropigmentation skin types and hairlines
There are many different variations of scalp micropigmentation treatments and the methods and techniques used will vary depending on the reason for treatment.
Scalp micropigmentation is a form of medical tattooing that is designed to give the appearance of hair follicles on the scalp where there is hair loss or thinning. It is performed by fully trained and qualified hair transplant technicians. Find out more here.
Different skin types for scalp micropigmentation
The skin type of everyone’s scalp can vary and this is why seeing a qualified hair technician to perform your scalp micro pigmentation is important. The type of technique and needle size will need to be personalised to meet the criteria of your scalp.
Different scalp skin types include:
- Thin skin
- Thick skin
- Aged skin
- Dry and or flaky skin
Once the hair technician has established your scalp skin type, they will then need to create a treatment plan that details what techniques will be required to cover marks, scars, and imperfections whilst also taking into consideration how firm the skin is and if it is loose or baggy.
A qualified hair technician will be able to work with all different skin types, but a patch test should be carried out before you start your micropigmentation treatment to ensure your suitability and enable them to work out the best method of treatment.
Scalp micropigmentation hairlines
If you are looking to have a scalp micropigmentation to your hairline, then you should work with your hair technician to decide on the best shape and finish that will suit your look and work with your existing hair style.
If you are keen to keep your hair shaven then your hairline should match the overall shape of your face. If you are not looking to shave your hair but want to enhance your hairline, then you should work with your existing hairline and look to instead give the impression of more thickness and density.
Here are some common scalp micropigmentation hairline types
- Feathered – This type of hairline uses different pigment densities and placements to give a natural and realistic hairline.
- Jagged – This type of hairline uses randomly placed pigments to give a soft natural appearance.
- Defined – This type of hairline is very sharp, prominent and lot more youthful. It works well to give an overall impression that you have a full head of healthy hair.
- Broken – This is a combination of Jagged and Defined where the hairline has a strong shape but still has a softer appearance around the edges.
Scalp micropigmentation with grey hair
Scalp micropigmentation is suitable for all hair colours and hair types including grey and aged hair. The majority of people tend to have naturally grey hair by the time they turn fifty but for some, grey hair can start appearing in the late teens and early twenties.
Grey hair combined with hair loss or thinning can be difficult, the greying of hair can cause hair loss to become more noticeable and make you appear older than you actually are.
Our Hair technicians use specially customised scalp pigments so you can be sure that the results of your scalp micropigmentation treatment are going to look natural and in-keeping with your natural hair.
Scalp micropigmentation with hair transplant scars
Many patients come to see us with hair transplant scars that they wish to cover up. Scarring on the scalp can cause issues with hair growth and often hair follicles do not survive in these areas which can make the scars more prominent.
Scalp micro pigmentation can effectively cover line scarring from FUT Hair Transplant procedures allowing it to camouflage naturally within your existing hair follicles on the scalp.
We can also cover scarring caused by poorly performed FUE Hair Transplant procedures where the scars take on a dotted appearance. SMP can blend this type of scarring back through to your existing hair.
We also offer FUE Hair Transplant procedures for scar repair.
Scalp micropigmentation for women
Scalp micropigmentation is suitable for men and women. Women are more likely to suffer from hair thinning as things like hormones, age and hair styling habits can contribute to this. Click here to find out more about female hair loss.
Female hair thinning or loss tends to occur along the crown and their natural hair parting will also widen. This is why scalp micropigmentation for women differs slightly as instead of the aim being to mimic the hair follicles on shaven heads, we are instead focussing on concealing the hair loss or thinning by using shading in the areas to give the appearance of a fuller head of hair.
Our hair transplant technicians are specialists in the treatment and are able to provide natural results for both male and female patients.
We also offer Female Hair Transplant procedures to help restore lost hair.
