What is a breast uplift?

A breast uplift, mastopexy or breast lift as it may also be referred to, is a plastic surgery procedure designed to lift the breast into a higher position on the chest. This is usually achieved by removing any loose skin from the breasts so then the breast can be tightened and the areola and nipple are moved to a higher position resulting in a firmer, uplifted and more youthful appearance to the chest.

Am I suitable for a breast uplift?

Not everyone may be suitable for a breast lift, for some, it may be that a breast implant alone is enough to give you the results that you want to achieve or for others, you may instead need a breast reduction to remove excess tissue as well as excess skin.
In most cases; patients will have started to notice their breasts dropping after pregnancy, breastfeeding or weight loss and in some cases, it can come with age. But for others, a drooping of the breast may have always been present which can also be helped with a breast uplift procedure.
Drooping of the breasts is medically known as breast ptosis. Breast Ptosis comes in a variety of severity grades.

Your breast surgeon will be able to determine which grade you are within your consultation but if you wanted to asses yourself there is a technique which you can find out more about in our ‘Do you have Breast Ptosis?’ blog here.

What will my scars be like after a Breast Uplift?

Scarring is a big deciding factor for patients who are considering breast uplift surgery. Unlike breast augmentation where the scar is often hidden away in the inframammary fold. A breast uplift usually entails some more visible scarring. There are a variety of different techniques but it will be up to your surgeon to decide which is going to give you the best result.

  • Anchor Lift – An anchor lift incision goes around the areola, down to the breast crease and then horizontally along the inframammary fold.
  • Lollipop Lift – A lollipop lift incision runs around the areola and vertically down to the breast crease.
  • Benelli Lift – The benelli lift incision runs around the outside of the areola it is also called the donut lift.
  • Crescent Lift – The crescent lift runs around the upper half of the areola.

What is the recovery like after a breast lift?

Recovery after a breast uplift is similar to most breast surgery procedures. As you wake from surgery, your incisions will be taped and you will most likely have a post-surgical bra on. You will be expected to wear this for 6 weeks following surgery to help support your breasts and keep them protected during this time. You will be sore after surgery but painkillers will be provided to you to help keep you comfortable. Most patients take 2 weeks off work depending on their job role for at least 3 weeks following surgery you should not be lifting anything above your head and you should not be driving for 1 week too.
You will experience swelling and possibly bruising too which will gradually subside over the next 6 weeks. All exercise should also be avoided for 6 weeks. At 6 weeks you will meet with your surgeon again who will then advise on how to continue with your recovery.

Is a breast uplift permanent?

A breast lift is a surgical procedure so its results are meant to be permanent and you should expect results to last for many years. There are some factors which may result in a change which include weight loss or gain, pregnancy and ageing.
We do advise patients to take care of their breasts and to be aware that if breast drooping was a significant issue prior to surgery then you will naturally be more prone to this occurring again so wearing bras that are the correct size and supportive will be important.
