As we age, small areas of discolouration or hyperpigmentation can appear on the face which can affect our confidence and self-esteem. These are known as age, liver, brown or sun spots and are most common on the face, hands, shoulders and arms.

What are Age, Liver, Brown or Sun spots?
Age, Liver, Brown or Sun spots are generally nothing to be concerned about, usually, the cause of them is down to UVA exposure. UVA sunlight stimulates your pigment cells (melanocytes) and causes them to produce a pigment called melanin which is what causes you to tan, but also causes these areas of pigmentation which unfortunately will not fade like your tan does.
Age spots are most common in people over 40 as by this age, your skin will have had a lot of exposure to UVA rays. It is not uncommon however to see younger patients with age spots who have spent an excessive amount of time in the sun or have used sun beds for example.
How to prevent Age, Liver, Brown or Sun spots?
The best way to prevent sun spots from appearing is to make sure you are protecting your skin by wearing SPF30 or higher when you’re outdoors throughout the year.

Treatments Available
IPL Photorejuvenation
Our intense pulsed light (IPL) photorejuvenation treatment uses laser light to selectively destroy pigmentation within the skin which is responsible for age, liver, brown and sun spots. It is suitable for use on all areas such as the face, neck, chest and hands.
Treatment with IPL Skin Rejuvenation can take anywhere from 15 minutes but will depend on the number of areas being treated. Generally a course of 2-3 treatments are required scheduled at 3-4 weekly intervals. To maintain results you may need a couple of top up sessions per year.

Obagi
The Obagi Nu-Derm system is a great way to treat age, liver, brown and sun spots spots. The Nu Derm system is a prescribed course of specialist skin products that contain 4% hydroquinone which decreases the melanin pigments in your skin that cause age, liver, brown and sun spots.
You will be required to attend a consultation with a specialist to assess your suitability and prescribe you the Obagi Nu-Derm system.

Laser Skin Resurfacing
Laser Skin Resurfacing is a great way to dramatically reduce the appearance of age, liver, brown and sun spots.
At The Private Clinic, we use Pearl which is the latest generation of skin resurfacing treatments. The treatment is ablative meaning it targets the surface layer of skin and the method is available in three different forms:
- Pearl Laser Resurfacing – Pearl Laser Skin Resurfacing treatment treats the top layers of skin and deeper layers too. The treatment works to target areas of imperfection such as age spots and sun damage as well as improving the overall quality of the skin by targeting the layers beneath promoting new collagen production.
- Pearl Fractional Laser Resurfacing – Only exposes a small area of the skin. As the laser pulse hits the skin it can destroy hyperpigmentation clusters whilst also creating tiny holes in the skin. This encourages the skin to form a protective layer and it’s the body’s healing process that is responsible for the treatment’s incredible results.
- Pearl Fusion – Pearl Fusion is a combination of the Pearl Resurfacing and Pearl Fractional treatments mentioned above. The face will first be treated with the Pearl laser and the Pearl Fractional laser will target areas requiring more aggressive treatment such as sun-damaged skin.
Treatment with Laser Skin Resurfacing can take anywhere from 20-30 minutes. Most patients only require 1 treatment to see excellent results.

Morpheus8
Morpheus8 is a great treatment to help reduce the appearance of age, liver, brown and sun spots.
The treatment involves placing the treatment device over the skin where microneedles will puncture the skin causing micro damage to the skins surface and therefore triggering our skins natural response to repair the damaged skin through the increase of collagen and elastin production and new skin cell turnover.
The treatment also radiofrequency energy to the damaged superficial layers of the skin. This helps to reduce areas of the skin showing signs of sun damage, age spots, liver spots or brown spots.
The result is an improved complexion, radiance, skin tone, and texture.
Treatment time is around 30-60 minutes and visible results can begin to be seen 1-2 weeks after your first treatment and can last for up to 3-6 months following your last treatment. Most patients are advised to have 1-3 treatments of Morpheus8 spaced 4-6 weeks apart to achieve the best results.
