You will be provided with a surgical bra following your breast lift and augmentation procedure. This bra will need to be worn for at least 6 weeks following your procedure. A surgical bra should have no wires as this can irritate the incisions. Your surgeon will be able to advise on where to purchase a second surgical bra to be worn whilst the other is being washed etc.
Your surgeon will take great care during the procedure however sometimes the milk ducts can be cut or damaged during an uplift procedure which can make breast feeding a challenge post-surgery. If you are feeling concerned, then speak to your surgeon who will be able to discuss the process in more detail.
There is a couple of different incision techniques for a breast lift and enlargement procedure. Most procedures are performed with a lollipop or anchor incision.
- A lollipop incision goes around the areola and down the breast.
- An anchor incision goes around the areola, down the breast and along the breast crease.
Your scars will appear red for at least the first 6 weeks following your procedure. After 6 weeks, your surgeon will be able to advise on scar care and over the next year they will gradually begin to fade.
The type of incision used in your procedure will be decided by your surgeon, they will be able to discuss this in more detail during your consultation.
If you are a patient who has good quality skin, has not experienced any significant weight changes, are not experiencing considerable sagging and want a small implant size then you may be suitable to have your breast lift and enlargement procedure performed at the same time.
If you are a patient who has skin laxity, moderate to severe breast sagging or dropping and looking to have a larger implant size then a 2-stage approach is likely to be suggested.
Your surgeon will discuss your options with you and go through the risks involved for each procedure.
A 2-stage procedure is when your surgical procedure is performed in 2 stages which means two separate operations or procedures.
It is common for a breast lift and enlargement to be performed as a 2-stage procedure. This is because two different objectives are trying to be achieved. A breast lift often involves reducing breast skin to lift the areola and nipple to sit higher on the chest. An enlargement or augmentation procedure involves adding an implant to the breast which stretches out the breast skin and adds additional volume.
When you combine these two procedures, it can cause excess stress on the scar and in some cases affect the lifting and shaping effect so the result may not be as uplifted as you may have hoped for.
If performed as a 2-stage procedure, the breast lift will be performed first and then around 6-12 months later a breast enlargement will be performed.
