If you’re going to stand any chance of getting rid of yours, it’s important to know how they got there in the first place. According to Dr Dennis Wolf at The Private Clinic of Harley Street, there are two main types.

Gynaecomastia is true enlargement of the breast tissue in the male chest,” he says. “All males have some element of breast tissue, and this can sometimes grow due to hormone fluctuation or weight fluctuation.” Occasionally, this can also be due to steroid use; we’re looking at you, gym bunnies.

“Pseudogynecomastia,” he adds, “is an enlargement of the chest appearance, but not due to breast tissue alone. In most cases, this is a combination of fat and gland, but mainly fat. The cause of this is weight fluctuation.”

So, to break that down: gynaecomastia = hormone-related enlargement of breast tissue; pseudogynecomastia = enlarged breasts due to an increase in body fat.

A DOCTOR EXPLAINS
Dr Dennis Wolf is joint Medical Director at The Private Clinic of Harley Street and has performed over 2,200 VASER liposuction procedures.
What are the symptoms of gynecomastia?
Gynecomastia can cause either one or both sides of the male chest to appear enlarged. In addition it is usually possible to feel a sort of gritty material behind the nipple itself. This is actually the gland. The softer tissue in this area, meanwhile, is fat.
Is the condition physically painful or mostly a psychological drawback?
Aside from the tenderness which the condition can cause, individuals are often most concerned with their appearance. Many patients who I see explain that the condition causes them to have low self-confidence and it makes them embarrassed to show this part of their body.
Has it become more of an issue in recent times?
With obesity levels rising, the condition has certainly become more of an issue. However, it’s also fair to say that awareness amongst men of the condition has grown, and more men are today aware of what can be done to target the condition.
How long does a procedure normally take?
A liposuction procedure can take anywhere between one and two hours.
How much does it cost?
From 2,500 upwards, depending on the severity of the condition and the complexity of the case.
How long does it take to recover from?
With smaller liposuction procedures, a patient can recover from the procedure within one or two days. With surgical removal, however, recovery will take slightly longer – usually between three days and a week.
How has it helped change lives for the better? Patients whom I have performed VASER lipo on have reported various positive changes. Many feel that the procedure has improved their self-confidence, many feel less restricted in their choice of clothing and, following the treatment, are happy to take their T-shirt off in public – something that previously they were very embarrassed to do because of how their chest area looked.
