Consultant Plastic Surgeon, Mr Davood Fallahdar, spoke with The Telegraph to share his expertise on treating ‘Turkey Neck’.

What is it?, What can cause it? And what can be done to reduce the appearance of one?

What is a Turkey Neck?

A Turkey Neck refers to the sagging or wrinkling of the skin on the neck which can trouble many people as the age. It is not the same as a ‘Double Chin’ which typically refers to excess fat within the chin and neck area.

What causes Turkey Neck

Age is the most common reason why someone may develop a ‘Turkey Neck as it occurs when skin loses collagen and elastin, leading to reduced firmness and elasticity. However lifestyle changes and exercise can cause changes to the muscles in your neck which can contribute to sagging skin.

Weight loss

“The whole body can ‘sag’ as the fat dissipates and the skin and soft tissues left behind have been stretched,’ says Mr Davood Fallahdar, a consultant plastic and reconstructive surgeon at The Private Clinic. This is particularly the case in rapid and extreme weight loss, he notes, “such as we now see with drugs like Wegovy.”

Health risks of having a turkey neck

Turkey Neck is not considered a huge health risk but there are cases where large amounts of loose excess skin in the area can contribute to sleep apnoea.

How to get rid of Turkey Neck without Surgery?

The article goes on to demonstrate how face yoga exercises can help to prevent Turkey Neck to keep your neck looking smooth and supple.

Non-Invasive Aesthetic and Cosmetic Treatments

Surgical Treatments for Turkey Neck

If the loose skin on your neck is past the point of repair with non-invasive treatments, surgery is a very effective option for even the most troublesome of turkey necks.

The catch-all term for turkey neck surgery is a neck lift, but precisely what that involves depends on the surgeon you see and the issues you are dealing with both cosmetically and physically, says Mr Fallahdar.

A typical neck lift involves removing residual fat and skin to bring definition back to the neck and jawline, as well as adjusting the platysma muscle. At some hospitals, neck lifts are performed under general anaesthetic and can take one to three hours, but Mr Fallahdar performs most neck lifts using just local anaesthetic, with optional sedation. Having the procedure under local anaesthetic makes recovery more swift.

“Scars are usually at incision sites just below the chin and behind the ears, and the surgery usually takes around 45 minutes. If the patient chooses local anaesthetic, we can be interactive with them during the procedure and show them results as we go in the mirror,” says Mr Fallahdar.

Patients typically go home the same day and can go back to work within days of the operation, although full healing of scars takes months. Costs at The Private Clinic are typically from around £7,550.
