What do Simon Cowell, Gordon Ramsay and David Hasselhoff have in common? They’ve all confessed to having Botox.
It seems this cosmetic treatment isn’t just for women: clinics across Britain have reported a rise in the number of men opting for ‘Brotox’
One of the many trade names for Botulinum Toxin A, Botox can be used to treat migraine headaches, muscle spasms, sweating, urinary retention, incontinence and wrinkles.
For wrinkles, tiny quantities are injected to block nerve impulses, stopping muscle contraction and temporarily softening frown lines. After a 15minute treatment, it takes around a week to work and the effects last four to six months.
Dr Dennis Wolf, of London’s The Private Clinic, explains the method. ‘We use a very small, fine needle for around three to 15 tiny injections into the skin, which leave tiny red marks for about half an hour but the patient can then go straight back to their day-to-day activities,’ he says.
