We’ve all been there, especially over lockdown. When we are seeing less of one another and working from home, our grooming standards and concepts of time slip and one day we find our hair hasn’t been washed in over a week. This week the usually ultra-groomed TV presenter Ulrika Jonsson posted on Instagram a photo of herself washing her hair and confessed that it was the first time she had done so in eight days. So just how long can we put off cleaning our hair?

The trichologist Jane Mayhead of The Private Clinic agrees. She says that washing once a week is suitable only for women with “coarse, curly hair. If you’ve got fine hair it’s going to get greasier quicker.” There are exceptions, she says. “A lot of women with black hair find that they need to co-wash with just conditioner and older people might find their scalp gets greasy less.”
