Wrinkle Relaxing injections are essentially used to reduce the appearance of wrinkles by relaxing the muscles. Dermal Fillers however are used to restore volume back into areas that have lost it. Dermal Filler can be used for deep wrinkles as it works to plump the skin and smooth the surface.

Wrinkle relaxing injections are made from a drug called Botulinum toxin which is FDA approved for medical and cosmetic use. It is effective at reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Small doses of botulinum toxin are injected into the areas being treated in small doses which work to relax the muscles that are responsible for forming the wrinkles.

Wrinkle relaxing injections are made from a drug called Botulinum Toxin which is a neurotoxic protein produced by Clostridium Botulinum Bacterium. It is actually the same toxin that causes life-threatening food poisoning called botulism but is safe to use in small doses.

Wrinkle relaxing injections work by blocking the signal from the nerves to the muscles which means that the muscle is no longer able to contract. When the muscle contracts and relaxes this then causes wrinkles in the treated area to soften and reduce in appearance. As there will be no movement in the muscle it can also help to prevent new wrinkles from forming.

Wrinkle Relaxing injections at The Private Clinic are only performed by a fully qualified doctor or registered nurse prescriber who understands the complex anatomy of the face. Botulinum toxin is a prescription-only medicine in the UK, which means it can only be prescribed to the patient by a qualified prescriber although there is currently no UK law about who is licensed to perform the treatment.
When it comes to choosing your wrinkle relaxing injection practitioner you should be asking about their training and experience, ask to see before and after photographs of previous patients and check to see if they are registered with a professional body such as the General Medical Council (GMC), British College of Aesthetic Medicine (BCAM) or British Association of Cosmetic Nurses (BACN).
It is important that you feel completely comfortable with your choice of practitioner for wrinkle relaxing injections.

The pain you experience from Wrinkle Relaxing injections should be minimal as the needle used is very fine and only a tiny amount of substance is used. Like most injection, the point of entry may be a little painful but the treatment is very quick making it bearable. Some patients choose to take painkillers before treatment but anti-inflammatory painkillers such as ibuprofen and aspirin can thin the blood which will heighten the risk of bruising post-procedure and your doctor or nurse may advise against treating you. If you do feel you need to take a painkiller before treatment then a non-inflammatory medication like paracetamol is the safest option. You must always be honest and upfront about what medication you are on before having any treatment.
The amount of wrinkle relaxing injections required depends on the areas that are being treated. For many patients, 1 wrinkle relaxing treatment is enough to get the results that they are aiming to achieve, for those who are having treatment for the first time then you may need to return for top-up treatment as it is common for medical practitioners to start gradually as it is easier to add to the treatment then reverse the effects.
To find out how many areas you require treating visit us at a clinic near you for a consultation with our specialists.

The time it takes to perform a wrinkle relaxing injection treatment will all depend on the amount of areas that are being treated. Generally, it takes around 15 minutes to perform but appointments can be up to 30 minutes. Once the treatment is complete you will be able to leave the clinic straight away and no downtime is required.
The chemical reaction for botulinum toxin can take different times to develop between patients, which is why some patients may see results quicker compared to others. You will be offered a two week review appointment which is where you will be able to come in and your medical practitioner will be able to see if any additional injections are required.
You will be able to move your face after treatment. The ‘frozen’ look that is commonly associated with Wrinkle Relaxing injectables is caused when too much toxin is administered into one area. At The Private Clinic our qualified practitioners aim to give you the most natural-looking results by only targeting the specific muscles responsible for the wrinkles and fine lines meaning that your normal facial expressions will be unaffected.
The effects from Wrinkle Relaxing injections can last from three to six months, at which point you can make an appointment for your next round of treatment. Clinical studies indicate that this treatment has a cumulative effect, so you should need fewer injections as time goes on. For the best results we recommend that you exercise and use the treated muscles areas for a few hours after treatment by frowning or lifting the eyebrows which allows the toxin to reach all of the muscle.
After you have had wrinkle relaxing injections at The Private Clinic we offer you a check-up appointment 2 weeks later so we can review your results. Leaving the clinic you will be able to carry on with your daily activities although it is recommended that for 24 hours post-procedure you avoid;
- Strenuous exercise
- Rubbing or massaging the face
- Tight headwear (if treated in the forehead)
- Alcohol
- We also recommend that you try and keep upright for at least 4 hours. You may experience some redness in the treated areas but this should fade over the course of the day, bruising after treatment is rare but it will fade over 48 hours.

We usually advise for patients to not wear any make-up for at least 4 hours after having treatment but this mainly because we don’t want you applying pressure to the face whilst you apply the products.
We recommend that you avoid strenuous exercise for 24 hours post-procedure. This is down to the risk of bruising and the Botulinum Toxin substance moving to other areas of your face. We also recommend avoiding activities such as yoga or pilates for 24 hours as inverted positions can also cause the substance to move to other muscles in the face whilst it is still settling.
You will be able to cleanse and moisturise your face as normal post-procedure however we recommend that you avoid massaging or rubbing the face ideally for 24 hours.
Only tiny amounts of Botulinum Toxin are used, so this treatment is not harmful. The most common side effects are temporary and localised bruising, slight redness of the skin and occasionally slight swelling at the injection site. Rare side effects are; bruising/swelling/redness at injection site, allergic reactions, infection, nausea, drooping of the eyebrow or upper eyelid or swelling and redness in eyelids, headache or flu-like symptoms, occasional numbness, rash, photosensitivity, dry mouth, dizziness and dry skin.
We recommend that you wait at least 7 days after having Wrinkle Relaxing injections before having another treatment such as a microdermabrasion, chemical peel, laser or even a sun bed.
Regular facial movement such as squinting and frowning can cause wrinkles and lines to form. Botulinum toxins restrict this movement which essentially means that it can delay the formation of lines and wrinkles which is where the reports of having regular Wrinkle Relaxing injections can delay or prevent the signs of ageing has come from.
If you stop having anti-wrinkle injections then your face will just gradually go back to how it was before you started treatment. Wrinkle Relaxing injections do not make your wrinkles worse so any changes to your wrinkles after you stop having treatment are often down to your face naturally ageing whilst you was used to the smoother appearance.
Wrinkle Relaxing injections are suitable for anyone who is experiencing and is upset with the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. The treatment is suitable for men and women from the mid-twenties upwards.

- Has an infection on the areas to be treated
- Is under 18 years of age
- Has a muscle problem or disease that affects the muscles such as Eaton Lambert syndrome

In some cases the changes in air pressure can affect the results of treatment causing the Botulinum Toxin substance to spread into other areas but this is rare. We usually advise patients to avoid flying for 24-48 hours to ensure that they achieve the best results. Wrinkle Relaxing injections do not affect your ability to drive however or use other public transport such as train or bus.
Wrinkle Relaxing injections are made from the drug called Botulinum Toxin which has been FDA approved for both medical and cosmetic purposes for over 20 years. Side effects can occur but they are rare. At The Private Clinic we like our patients to be fully aware of all treatment risks so this will all be fully discussed in your consultation with one of our doctors, nurses or surgeons.
