Labiaplasty

Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure carried out to correct and define the appearance of the labia, creating a neater and more symmetrical appearance.

Labiaplasty surgery works to reshape or reduce the size of the inner labia minora, the small lips of skin on either side of the vaginal opening. The procedure involves removing excess tissue with a scalpel and closing the incisions using fine, dissolvable stitches. It is a straightforward simple procedure with excellent outcomes. Our surgeons have unique experience in this specific surgery which can be performed under local anaesthetic or general anaesthetic, based on your preference and the surgery required.

Labiaplasty is often performed for aesthetic reasons but is also suitable for patients looking to relieve discomfort that may be caused by wearing tight clothes or taking part in exercise or sexual intercourse due to an enlarged labia.

Labiaplasty also known as labia reduction surgery or vaginal reshaping surgery is becoming increasingly popular and less of a taboo for women to address. It was reported that 194,086 labiaplasty procedures were performed worldwide in 2022 by The International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery International Survey 2022.

If you are concerned about the shape and size of their labia, whether it is a result of natural childbirth, age, or even weight loss. Our plastic surgeons have many years of experience.

Based on what will solve your concerns the most effectively, our surgeons will use one of three labiaplasty approaches.

  • The Trim Technique
  • The Wedge Technique
  • The De-epithelization Technique

Our dedicated team can fully explain the procedure and answer all of your questions in a confidential consultation.

Consultations for labiaplasty surgery are available at our London Harley Street, and Northampton clinics.

What to Expect

The Private Clinic has been treating patients for over 40 years with thousands of women placing their trust in us each year. We pride ourselves on being able to offer a personalised service. We have a team of friendly nurses and expert surgeons who understand the importance of this decision and will support you throughout your journey with us.

The Consultation

The first stage of your labiaplasty treatment journey will be a consultation with one of our expert labiaplasty surgeons.

At your consultation, your surgeon will go through the procedure in detail and examine you to assess your suitability for surgery. A chaperone will be available at all times to help you feel comfortable.

Your surgeon will then discuss:

  • Your medical history
  • Your expectations from the surgery
  • Risks and Complications of labiaplasty surgery
  • Aftercare

Following your consultation, you will be introduced to your dedicated patient coordinator who will be your point of contact should you wish to proceed with surgery.

Pre-Operative Appointment

In the interests of patient safety, all our patients are assessed against our patient selection criteria.

Following your labiaplasty consultation your medical history will be reviewed and the pre-operative nurse will choose which pre-operative tests to carry out which are going to be most appropriate to you.

Most pre-operative assessments include a blood test, MRSA swabs, urine test and a blood pressure test.

Patients should disclose any medication that they are taking so our medical team can advise on what they should stop taking ahead of their procedure such as Aspirin.

Patients who smoke are recommended to stop smoking at least six weeks before their procedure as this can increase the risk of slower healing and complications.

The Labiaplasty Procedure

The labiaplasty procedure is a surgical procedure, which can be performed either under local anaesthetic or general anaesthetic – your surgeon will recommend the most suitable procedure for you. It takes approximately 30 minutes to 1 hour to perform.

The inner and outer labia can be altered and reduced in appearance to fit a more standard labia shape and appearance. The entire labia area can not be removed, as they are needed to protect the delicate inner areas.

It is important to choose an experienced surgeon to avoid some of the common problems associated with inexperienced surgeons. There is minimal scarring as any incisions will be carefully made to be hidden by the natural folds around the labia.

It can be a very sensitive topic for patients and we assure you that you will be treated with the utmost discretion and professionalism.

There are 3 main types of Labiaplasty surgery techniques.

Trim Labiaplasty

The trim labiaplasty technique is the most commonly performed type of labiaplasty procedure. It is very effective at correcting a wide range of issues affecting both the inner and outer labia. The procedure involves a linear incision being made along the outer margin of the labia. The excess tissue is removed from the labia and the remaining edges are sutured together. The trim technique removes any dark pigmentation on the edge of the labia tissue which results in a more youthful pink colour on the edge of the labia which is often desirable for patients.

Wedge Labiaplasty

The wedge method is also known as the central v wedge technique. This slightly more complex procedure is often used for correcting asymmetry and excess length. The procedure involves removing a wedge-shaped/pie shaped piece of tissue from the central part of the labia. The incision is usually V shaped with the two edges being sewn together. The wedge technique is not suitable for patients wanting to remove pigmentation from the border of the labia, unlike the trim technique. It does however mean that the border of the labia is preserved maintaining the labia’s natural wrinkled edge.

The De-epithelization Labiaplasty

The de-epithelialization method involves making an oval-shaped incision in the inner sections of the labia minora. The outer tissue layer is then removed from the labia and the deepest layer of tissue which consists mainly of fat cells and connective tissue, is left intact. The two edges are then sutured back together, and the overall size of the labia is reduced. This is a great technique that helps to preserve the natural texture and sensations of the labia

After your labiaplasty procedure

Patients can experience some slight swelling and discomfort for the first week after the labiaplasty procedure. During the second week, the swelling will subside entirely and you will hardly be able to notice the incision marks. Most of our patients are advised that they may need between 1 and 3 weeks off work, depending on their own healing process.

You will be advised to take it easy for a couple of weeks – avoid strenuous exercise for 2 weeks and vaginal intercourse for approximately 4 weeks.

Full advice and support will be given and available for you post-surgery as part of our aftercare promise.

The Labiaplasty Results

The results of a labiaplasty are a defined, neatly shaped labia. You can get back to your normal routine swiftly, making sure to follow the advice given by our medical team. You can then go about your daily life with the right kind of confidence and comfort.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long do I need to take off work after a labiaplasty?

We advise that you take a full week off work following your labia reduction surgery.

During your consultation, you will be able to discuss your role at work and what tasks are required of you which help your surgeon to advise on whether longer would be required or not.

When can I resume sexual activities following a labiaplasty?

To allow for a full recovery of the area, we advise abstaining from sexual intercourse for at least 4 weeks, but ideally 6 weeks. Your surgeon will then be able to advise when you can safely resume sexual activities following your 6-week follow-up.

Can a Labiaplasty help reduce the size of a large labia

A labiaplasty procedure is usually performed to reduce the size of the labia minora (inner lips). Labiaplasty can also be performed to reshape/reduce the size of the labia major, (outer lips), although this is less commonly performed.

What are the restrictions following a Labiaplasty?

Our surgeons recommend that activities including strenuous exercise, sexual activity, and physical activities like running, swimming, and cycling should ideally be avoided until 6 weeks following a labiaplasty procedure.

After 6 weeks, patients will return back to see the surgeon who, based on their recovery so far, will be able to tell them when it would be safe to return to their usual activities.
